Welcome to Smalls Auctions Sale No 29. This month we include perhaps the World’s rarest circulating copper coin, the Australia ‘English’ obverse 1930 Penny. To date only three of this variety have been uncovered this being the finest known at PCGS EF45. This variety was a late discovery which only came to light in the 1970s and, this particular coin comes accompanied by a letter dated 9 June 1976 from the Controller of Royal Australian Mint certifying its authenticity. Also, in the Sale is the Benchmark 1923 Florin graded PCGS MS67. This is one of only two Coat of Arms reverse George V florins that have been graded MS67 and, in our opinion it is under graded. It was the pick of a small number of 1923 Florins set aside by the London firm Baldwins and with near flawless surfaces and its iridescent old-world colour it stands out as the finest known Australian George V Florin and is deserving of an MS68. Also featured are seventy lots pertaining to John Gardiner Austin who as Colonial Secretary of Hong Kong in 1877 was acting Governor for 52 days. Of special interest is a brush pot made of impressed tortoise shell and hand painted in gold featuring cockerels nesting. There is also an interesting selection of popular Polish and Russian coins in the world section and a rarely seen Great Britain ‘Newland’ Pound in the cameo selection of banknotes. The last hundred items is another strong selection of Australian modern coin issues being offered at a fraction of their issue prices. All in all, there is something for everyone.
