Welcome to Smalls Auctions Sale 99 In this sale we have brought together a wide selection of tokens, medals, banknotes, books, documents, and photographs spanning the history of modern Australia. From a First Edition of the Journal written by Captain Phillip who established Sydney, New South Wales as a penal colony in 1788 through to a medal celebrating Australia’s Bi-centennial two hundred years later, there is something there to interest anyone with a passing interest in Australia’s European History. Some of the highlights include fourteen early Promissory notes which traded as currency in the early decades of the colonies. There are early banknotes including a Ten Pound of the Bank of Newcastle and the spurious Austilin Bank One Pound printed by ‘Tommy the Rogue Banker,’ as well as three early land grants signed by three early Governors of N.S.W., Macquarie, Bourke and Gipps. There is also two pieces of Colonial scrimshaw, one cheekily engraved with a Royal Coat of Arms and an Ode to Bacchus, and the other featuring Australia’s answer to Robin Hood and Jesse James, Ned Kelly. The Newspapers and Government reports provide an excellent insight into the struggles of a developing nation once described by a one of its Prime Ministers as being “at the arse end of the World.’ In the Age of Covid-19 that has certainly worked out as a plus. We hope you find something to interest you. Smalls Auctions
