Welcome to Smalls Auctions Sale 138 In this sale we have a wide selection of Australian Paper Banknotes dating back to 1913 and the first issue of the ‘Commonwealth of Australia’ £1. Less than 20 notes have survived of this issue and the ‘Red Serial’ £1 on offer has the highest recorded serial number. A true rarity in The Australian Banknote series. Paper Decimal notes replaced pounds, shillings & pence on the 14th February 1966 and continued on with the ‘Commonwealth of Australia’ title. It wasn’t until the Australian Labor Party headed by the firebrand Prime Minister Gough Whitlam swept into office in 1972 that the title on the note issues was simplified to ‘Australia.’ The notes signed by the signature combination of ‘Phillips & Wheeler’ straddle this change with notes of 1972 featuring the old title and the issues of 1974 now featuring the new. Certainly, the change upset the more conservative elements of Australian Society who saw in its title a reflection of the ‘Commonwealth of Nations’ which had replaced the old ‘British Empire.’ However, Australia’s preferred treatment from ‘Mother England’ changed radically in 1973 when Great Britain signed up to the Common Market (EU) and perhaps it was a prescient signal to the World that Australia was at last an independent nation to be reckoned with on its own terms. It is a truism that banknotes as well as coins are the perfect reflection of a nation’s progress revealing in their designs the politics and commerce of the society they support and the notes on offer in this Sale track Australia’s journey. We hope you find something of interest in the lots on offer. Smalls Auctions.
