Welcome to Smalls Auctions Sale 174. It is not often that you can purchase a fully detailed NSW 1813 Dump (Fifteen Pence) Coin for a bargain price. In our Sale we are offering an example of the AI Type graded by PCGS as EF details (repaired). The beauty of this coin is that it has the edge denticles that originally encircled the coin near complete front and back. This is a step-up in detail on this issue which only occurs on a very small fraction of the better examples known. It should be remembered that these coins were essentially hand-struck using a drop hammer press so that is why perfectly centred examples with edge detail are extremely rare. Although about 40,000 were struck it is estimated that only 1,000 or so coins have survived, and these are mostly in poor condition with little or no detail. To date PCGS have graded 37 Dumps with only one other achieving an EF grade. Of the handful graded by NGC a coin with VF details is the highest graded. The repair, if it is a repair, is just the hint of a circle below the ‘U’ and ‘T’ of ‘SOUTH’ on the obverse of the coin. PCGS have obviously determined that the coin has been plugged to repair where someone in a past life attempted to pierce the coin for wearing as an amulet or charm. However, there is no sign on the reverse of the coin of the surface having been pierced which discounts this diagnosis to a degree. Did the person have second thoughts when drilling through the coin or is the flaw really an unfortunate natural surface blemish. Regardless, if you can live with half a doubt, then it is the chance of a lifetime to pick up a highly detailed coin for a mere fraction of its otherwise value. The bargain of the year? It’s up to you to decide. The Sale starts with some impressive Amber specimens retrieved from the shores of the Baltic Sea. There is also a nice specimen of a Boulder Opal mined at Coober Pedy that would make an unusual paper weight. The early Georgian and Regency silver tableware on offer were once the property of John Gardiner Austin who was briefly the Governor of Hong Kong in 1877. They would certainly impress your friends and family when they sat down for their Christmas Day lunch. And as usual there is a nice selection of Australian Pre-Decimal coins and modern Royal Australian Mint issues from which to choose. Thank you for participating in our Sale Smalls Auctions
