Welcome to Smalls Auctions Sale 50. This sale contains a scattering of Objet d’Art for collectors of the obscure. There are intimate pen sketches by William Dobell, one of Australia’s greatest artists as well as an oil of a barque in sail by French Artist Marie-Edouard Adam who signed the work ‘Peintre de la Marine.’ Adam is a known marine artist whose works have been sold by Sothebys and Christies for considerable sums in the past. We also have several 19th Century Russian Religious Icons with clear hallmarks to their Silver overlays. These were used for discreet private family worship during the years of Communist rule when religion essentially went underground. Two Icons feature the ‘big guy’ and the other the distinctly Russian ‘Saint Boris.’ Again, we have a boutique offering of Watches and Jewellery as well as a good selection of Ivory carvings. There is also a nice group of antique silver items some of which are now approaching their intrinsic value with the recent sudden rise of silver bullion to close to AUD $30 per ounce. A stand-out in the silver on offer is the presentation suite of a double-handled Silver Urn with four matching Goblets in the form of Griffins. The Urn sits on a presentation stand with an engraved plaque which reads - "From Florence Countess Dowager of Kingston to John Garnett Tatlow Esqre on the occasion of his Gold Wedding, in memory of untold kindness received from him, by her and all her family. July 31st, 1901.” It was certainly better than receiving a Hallmark Card. Also, of note is the covered cup fashioned from an Emu Egg by the celebrated Melbourne silversmith William Edwards in around 1860. Edwards is often attributed with being the first to use the local Emu Egg as a substitute for Ostrich Eggs that were transformed into cups in England. A fine piece of Australiana. We hope you find something in our Sale to sate your unique tastes. Smalls Auctions
