Welcome to Smalls Sale 51. With the current rise of ‘populist nationalist’ governments around the World the faint drums of war can be heard by keen students of history. Whether it’s the tribal beat of Vladimir Putin with his strong man antics, the tweet-inspired politics of Donald Trump, the sheer buffoonery of a ruderless Boris Johnson or the pushing of the boundaries by China’s supreme leader Xi Jinping, there are certainly plenty of opportunities for that catastrophic mis-step that catapults the World into conflict. That’s not to mention the perpetual face-off of nuclear rivals India and Pakistan or despots with the ‘bomb’ such as Kim Jong-un who wouldn’t blink at pressing the button if they got an inkling their days were numbered. It can be argued that military history is just propaganda written by the victors but, since the advent of photography the stark realities are there to see for the ‘cheer squads’ of both sides of a conflict. World War I in particular was starkly captured by the photographer’s lens and in this sale, there is a good offering of contemporary images of War carnage mostly involving the Australian troops. There are also autographs of pivotal decision-makers, Trench-art fashioned from shell casings and nuts and bolts found in the battlefield by the cannon-fodder as well as an ‘original’ piece of 'Art' drawn at the Western Front during World War I by the noted Australian artist Theodore Penleigh-Boyd. Between the barrages he found an old cartographers nib in the dirt and drawing on past inspiration he began to capture daily life at the Front on any available scrap of paper. He published the works in 1918 in the book ‘Salvage’ and an original copy is included in the Sale. All in all, there is a wide selection of collectables which remind us of both the chivalry and savagery of War. Lest we forget! Smalls Auctions
