Welcome to Smalls Auctions Sale 214. In this Sale we feature a number of high-grade Australian Pre-Decimal coins knocking on the door of the finest known examples. The first to mention is the exquisite Australia 1915 London Shilling PCGS MS64. There are only two coins of this date and mint with a higher grade. This coin exhibits the original old-world tone that is associated with coins sourced from Europe and more particularly in this instance from Britain. The Industrial Revolution certainly brought rapid technological change making mass produced items for all levels of society, but it also spewed from its factory chimneys an atmosphere heavy with toxic gasses for which we are today paying the penalty. However, for numismatists this problem had a silver-lining with the pea-soup fogs of late 19th Century and early 20th Century London generating exquisite patination on their silver coins which is still cherished to this day. The second coin of note is the 1948 Y. Penny MS64 BN. Struck by the Perth Mint, these coins are always ‘dusky’ in appearance and the coin on offer is as bright as they come. Although PCGS has graded some coins R&B there is not a cigarette paper’s difference between them - and the only coin graded higher is a PCGS MS65BN. The third coin of note is the 1927 Commonwealth Florin PCGS MS65. Again, only a PCGS MS65+ sits in front of this coin in the PCGS Population Report so it stands as a very worthy contender for the coin collector seeking the best of the best. But it’s not all coins in Sale 214. An extremely rare Whale Tooth Scrimshaw captures the Hong Kong city skyline of 1860, while moving into the 20th Century the souvenir ‘Spitfire’ Pin from WWII is a stark memento of the ‘Battle of Britain.’ There is also a host of other collectables and jewellery included in the Sale to interest most collectors so its well worth a rummage through the lots on offer.
