Welcome to Smalls Auctions Sale 19 which offers you a good selection of quality coins, banknotes and collectables. The sale begins with a very heavy Diamond encrusted Cigarette Case dating from the opulent ‘upstairs – downstairs’ era which contains around AUD $3,000 of 9ct Gold. If your friends are still not impressed, you might try pinning Lot 65 to your fridge door, a greeting card signed “George” (V) - Sandringham (Castle) Norfolk. For collectors of war-related material the ‘Hay Internment Camps’ Sixpence Banknote is an intriguing item. At the outbreak of World War II the British Government rounded up the Germans and Austrians on its shores and shipped them to Australia. Interned in outback Australia near the town of Hay they produced for a very short time their own paper camp currency whose designs contained hidden messages signalling their unjust plight. Another intriguing banknote is the Bi-Centennial $10 note hand-signed by Bernie Fraser, the Governor of the Reserve Bank and Bob Johnston the Secretary of the Treasury. How times quickly change, as followers of Australian politics would well remember the furore that erupted just a few years earlier when the Australian treasurer Paul Keating hand-signed an Australian Dollar note bearing the Queen’s portrait. One of the coin highlights of the sale is a 1966 ‘London’ Die Proof 20 Cent which is thought to be unique in private hands. It is speculated that this museum standard coin may well have been gifted to the notorious coin forger David Allan Gee by James Henderson, who as Controller of the Royal Australian Mint allowed Gee unfettered access to Australia’s numismatic treasures. The sale also offers a good selection of Australian Threepences some of which are amongst the finest known. Serious collectors looking to improve their set register should look carefully at these. Thank you for your patronage and best of luck with your bidding. Smalls Auctions
