Welcome to Smalls Auctions Sale 167. Many of our customers will be taking a well-deserved break over Easter sitting in front of the large television downloading the latest Netflix period drama or going back to basics by tuning in to a past movie classic. In our sale we have included several photographs of actors from the classic years of Hollywood when storylines reflected real life and movies were largely devoid of fantasy and special effects. Sometimes it’s refreshing to spend a few hours with mere mortals rather than with gods and goblins. Also in our Sale is a small selection of Aboriginal photographs from the early 20th Century studios of Charles Kerry and Henry King. Both these renowned Australian photographers staged ethnographic studies of the native population which were sold worldwide to enthusiastic collectors. When their studios closed the original glass negatives and working stock were purchased by the bookseller William Tyrrell who continued to sell them from his Museum in Pitt Street Sydney well into the 1940s. They are now highly sought after by the curators of State and National Museums and Libraries who in the past have paid thousands for these original images. Another small collection of outstanding Museum quality are the sporting awards of Charlie Lees spanning the years 1908 to 1914. Lees was in the winning Eastern Suburbs 2nd (or Reserve Grade) Team in the inaugural New South Wales Rugby League Competition in 1908 and in 1911 scored Easts only try (touchdown) to claim their first Premiership win. These premiership winning fobs are solid gold, albeit 9ct. The Sale also includes a fine selection of Australian and World Coins, some Vintage Watches, a fully signed Beatles Fan Photo and a number of revelatory items relating to Frank Sinatra’s controversial trip to Australia in 1974.
